Impressions

During my recent visit to Porto, one of the highlights was undoubtedly the Portuguese Centre of Photography, located just 0.5 km from my accommodation. This cultural landmark not only showcases the rich history of photography in Portugal but also hosts impressive exhibitions that captivate visitors. I particularly enjoyed exploring the various collections and installations that highlight both historical and contemporary photographic works. The building itself, a former prison, adds an intriguing layer to the experience, combining art and history in a unique setting.

Strolling along the picturesque Cais da Ribeira, roughly 1 km from the centre, was another unforgettable experience. The vibrant riverside area is filled with colorful buildings, lively restaurants, and the alluring rhythm of the Douro River. I found myself enchanted by the charming atmosphere, with street musicians and artists contributing to the lively ambiance. Stopping for a traditional Francesinha at one of the local eateries, I enjoyed my meal while soaking in the breathtaking views of the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge and the mesmerizing sunset over the river.

The serene Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, also only a half-kilometer away, offered a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The meticulously maintained gardens provided a peaceful retreat, where I could stroll amongst the lush greenery and enjoy panoramic views of Porto. The tranquility of the gardens was a beautiful contrast to the vibrant energy found in other parts of the city. A visit to the nearby Mercado do Bolhão, about 1 km away, completed my experience, where I reveled in the sights, sounds, and smells of this historic market. From fresh produce to local delicacies, it was a sensory feast that truly encapsulated the essence of Porto’s culinary culture.
